I had dinner with Ryuchi Yoshida, the owner of JPD food Japan. He is in the area meeting with breeders as Dainichi, Sekiguchi, Torazo, Kase and a few other breeders have been using his food with great results and they want to continue. Wecalso talked about the difficulties of getting his food into the US. It is a long process that is only hindered by the lack of containers and the high expense. They have just produced a large volume of fresh food for the US, the permits are in place but they are having trouble finding the three containers they need. I told him I would be willing to absorb some of the shipping costs to get the food to the US.

I visited Sekiguchi Koi Farm next. Sekiguchi. I was introduced to Masayuki Sekiguchi by Masaru Hosoka as Masaru and he are very good friends. It was 8 or 9 years ago and I was actually trying to be able to buy some of his Pearl Gin Rin Koi. Masaru's father, Shoichi Hosokai (the man responsible for Kuri Goshiki and the Asagi as we know them) took me to Sekiguchi on my first visit. It was a very memorable trip.

Over time I realized that Sekiguchi Showa were special and not quite the same as other Showa. Sekiguchi is a favorite of mine and I always look forward to seeing him and buying Showa. I bought a lot of very nice Showa Tosai. Also, I am not ashamed to tell you that I have seen Masayuki in a Tux and he is one of my Japanese man crushes.

Once he told me what he had available we went into the greenhouse. There is nothing more brilliant than a net full of Sekiguchi Showa...

When they seine these ponds it never really looks like there are that many Tosai. I always think I could just buy them all. Then you find out there are over 400pcs. in there.

Re: Tokyo/Ojiya/Isawa/Horishima/Minuma bound PSKoi Spring 2022

Postby Russell Peters » April 14th, 2022, 3:46 am

In the afternoon was my appointment with Masaru Hosokai at Hosokai Koi Farm. I go way back with this family and started my relationship when Shoichi Hosokai, Masaru's father, was still in charge. Shoichi never spoke any English nor was he ever going to but we had a way of communicating and we became good friends.

Shoichi introduced me to many breeders and would take me around to some of his friends that were small but produced nice Koi. Shoichi introduced me to Teradomari and the most important introduction came when he introduced me Toshio Sakai. Toshio Sakai, AKA Matsunosuke, took me under his wing and began teaching many, many things about Koi that got me where I am today. He would teach me things that were so important that I would literally ask him if I was allowed to share the information. Sometimes I was and sometimes I wasn't.

One of the things Toshio taught me I finally told my wife a few years back. I think she asked me how long I knew this and I said a long time. This might get me into trouble but, she has such a good eye anyway, I thought it might be too dangerous to teach her more.

When Shoichi Hosokai passed away Masaru, who had already been working with me, took over. Early on we would take time to go to visit his children at school when they had school events. I remember siting in a gymnasium waiting for the children to be led in and then seeing the look on Masaru's sons face when he saw me. I was the only 6'5" foreigner in the room and when I waved to him all his friends lit up because he knew me. At that moment he was the special kid in the room. It was awesone.

His son, Yusei Hosokai, just finished a 3 year apprenticeship at Sakai Fish Farms and is now working with his father. Masaru beams with pride every time he introduces his son. Here they both are.

As I mentioned the Hosokai family are well known for developing Asagi and Kuro Goshiki but they are also known for othere varieties. Some of the best Shiro Utsuri I have ever seen have come from them. They also do Aka Matsuba, Kosui, Kin Showa, Showa, Shusui, GR Showa, Kujaku, Kin Shiro and the list goes on but...

The one that stands out the most is one that is very hard to get. The Ochiba Goshiki or Goshiki-Shigure as it is called. It is just that, a mix of those two Koi and when it is good it is undeniable as a beautiful and unique Koi. I bought this one in October 2019.

I was not able to get any Goshiki-Shigure Tosai but I did get a nice mix. I got a lot of very nice Asagi and Kujaku. The Asagi include Narumi and Konjo as well as GR Asago and GR snow Asagi.
