The next breeder I visited was Sakazume. Last year I got some nice Kawarimono and Goromo there and, again this year, he said i could hand select. When we got there there weren't that many Tosai left and he explained he has another Tosai house up in the mountains and it is snowed in. Probably will be for a while as the snow is so deep it isn't going to melt anytime soon.

I only ended up with 20pcs but he said if he could get to the Tosai house before the Tosai ship he will select another 20 to make a full box.

Since we had finished early at Sakazume we went back to Torazo Koi farm. When you have extra time it is always nice to see if there is anything else to see, other than what was planned. Yuki and I were sitting in Tsuyoshi's office talking about it and we started throwing around some ideas. All phones calls ended up yielding nothing new. Tsyoshi had left and gone to Kawakami, also known as Jirosuke. We don't know how long he was gone but Yuki got a call saying we should go there and look at what he has. I couldn't hand select but I could take a look as he had Goshiki, GR Goshiki and Beni Kumonryu.

When we arrived I figured Tsuyoshi would still be there. He had already left, he's a stealthy guy, and Jirosuke had five baskets of Koi set up. each basket would be one box. I could take one, or I could take all, but I could not hand select or mix. Faced with that dilemma I did the only thing I could do as each basket had some really nice Koi in them. I bought all five.

Kawakami has become well know for their Goshiki and GR Goshiki as they have been winning a lot of awards with their fish.

These are the only pictures I have as no hand selecting means they don't want to spend the time taking pictures. The Tancho Goshiki in the pictures are about 4" and there are 90 of them in there. The other Tosai are 7" to 10".

Some of those Beni Kumonryus look really interesting-especially the ones where the sumi is edging the beni! You are getting a lot of fish that will fun fish to follow as they grow.

Last, but not least, is the story about the Tancho Showa. I had been asking to see a breeder, who shall remain nameless, because I thought he would have a lot of Budo Goromo Tosai. It is not Marujyu. Yuki said he doesn't have Goromo this year but has a lot of Tancho Showa. I was stunned to hear this and figured it was too good to be true. How could any breeder still have so many Tancho Showa left? We drove up and there were two Tosai ponds fill of Tancho Showa. They were good sizes to, probably 8" to 10" with great Sumi patterns.

I began asking about the Tancho and he was hemming and hawing and I couldn't get a straight answer. No pricing, no availability, nothing. I kept pressing it a bit but and he started saying, "well, my father is till culling and he wants to keep going through them a few more times". I quickly responded that I don't leave until the 8th of February hoping that would make a difference and he just smiled at me. I then hear Yuki say, "Hey Russ, look at these". On the other side of the greenhouse is a pond with 20 to 30 Sansai Tancho Showa. I started hinting about pricing and, even though he said they were for sale, he just wouldn't talk price. I suddenly realized something and said, "So, you either really don't want to sell these or you just want too much money for them". All I got was another smile.

At this point his father came in, but his father does not speak English, and I went back to looking at the Tosai and dreaming. If a few more minutes Yuki said it was time to go. On the way back to the car we stopped in another green house that had two ponds full of Nisai Tancho Showa. I didn't say a word.

I don't have any pictures to prove what I said is true but I do have pictures I took of the road on the drive up the mountain.

In some circles the measure of a man is how many beers he can drink...our next stop was Takahashi. Takahashi is where I got the Beni Kumonry and Doitsu Sanke from last year. Each year a breeders schedule can be slightly different as it is usually determined by weather, demand or one's ability to hold back what you don't want to sell. This year my visit came at a time where he wasn't able to prepare the grade od Tosai I got last year. He did have a group of gems that were a little more affordable. These are the last three pictures my camera took before it met water for the first time...
