My last stop down South was to Matsue Koi Farm. This is not one of my favorite stops just because he uses my Koi mug. It is because Matsue Kohaku are some of the finest in Japan. The Sensuke bloodline he uses is from his family and it is used by a lot of the best Kohaku breeders in Japan. Not only that, for a guy who speaks very little English, he has an amazing sense of humor, and is always a very happy guy. Surprising as he is also known as the Japanese "Rambo".

BTW, the coffee mug was dirty, I checked, so I think they actually do use it.

From the very beginning of this trip I have been looking for Sanke Tosai. Torazo had very few, he is known for Sanke, INC had some but not higher quality, and they are known for Sanke, Tamaura was out of Tosai, Taniguchi had very few available, although very nice, so I was about to give up. Then I remembered seeing some Sanke coming from Matsue. I have also seen some very nice Showa from Matsue but he is primarily a Kohaku breeder.

Matsue knows what I like, and he knows what I buy with Kohaku, so when I arrived he had a tub of Kohaku picked and ready for me to go through. I surprised him by asking if he had any Kawarimono. Many breeders are adding them and I am always interested in finding something unusual. He said yes and took me around to a couple of green houses and showed me his Kawarimono. None were Tosai so I asked about Tosai. He smiled and said follow me. We went to another greenhouse and it was full of Mukashi Ogon and Yamabuki Ogon Tosai. He knows I like to hand pick so he gave me a funny look and told me how many per box and asked how many boxes I wanted. I gave him a break and ordered a box.

We went back to the greenhouse with the Kohaku in it and he asked me if I wanted to pick. I said yes, but do you have any Sanke? I told him I have seen Sanke from his farm so he must have a few. He pointed and said two tanks...I quickly went through the tank of Kohaku, yes I bought some, but then spent an hour going through the Sanke Tosai. I found some decent Sanke Tosai at a Kohaku breeder.

I have been following updates from the MOFA site in Japan. That is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The new travel ban was supposed to be from 12/28/20 to 1/31/21. I really didn't think 1 month was going to be the end of it and all travel to Japan is still suspended as they have pushed it forward to 3/01/21. I think they are just going to keep doing this for a while. I am not going to come back in April if I have to do another 2 week quarantine but I just don't think they will be letting anyone back in by then.
With that in mind, I have been buying a lot more Tosai and I went back to Sekiguchi. Normally, in April, I buy a higher grade but I don't think there will be any left by then as most dealers are buying more than normal. I picked up 28pcs. of a higher grade of his Showa.

I just realized I never finished posting my full trip. After Sekiguchi I did go to Minuma Koi Farm. The Denver Koi Club is having a Minuma growout so the first thing we did is to look for some Tosai for their event.
