No, the gasket does not go over the spring. The spring holds the gasket in place. Yes, tighten the nuts, they shouldn't be loose.

I'M A HAPPY GIRL!

On Russ' suggestion, I went to Lowes this morning and bought a Hunter 4" pop up valve for about $4.50. I was worried about having to destroy the original valve to get the screw out and my fix not working. But the screw just slipped right out the bottom of the original valve when I turned it upside down. YAY!

I took the new valve apart, took all the insides out of the housing and slipped them into the original housing on the RDF. I used the new gasket I made out of the Korky Toilet Flapper. Put everything back together and the plate is lifting about 4" and water is gushing out of the waste tray on flushes now!!! I'm ecstatic!

Now I'm wondering if I have too much water coming out. LOL

But with the force that it's coming out now, I'm pretty sure I can plumb it into my 4" waste line because it should push the flapper open easily on the check valve. I'm going to give it a try next week.

Russ, thank you so much for taking the time to go through this machine and figure out easy fixes!! I'd be in serious trouble right now if it weren't for you.

I was a tad petrified to do the repair because I didn't want to destroy the original piece in case the new one didn't work. I was so relieved when that bolt fell out with no problem!

I keep going out there just to watch the water gush out. LOL Yeah, I'm sad!
