i currently have cermedia in use because it is cycled, even after the sieve and matting it is Washing away.

Just thought I would add, I looked into momotaro media and it is the same stuff as the link I posted. I don't know how much difference brand makes but it is described almost exactly the same. What I found for price, they are about the same as well if I did the math correct. I will get more of it, not sure from who yet, but it does look to be the best choice.

Kevin, this may be a good option for you as well since you are looking to add bio-filtration. It is super easy to add to a system, super easy to build, adds a lot of bio and is fairly inexpensive other than the media itself. I just use the cheap black and yellow stackable tubs from home depot, about $8 each. Even just using a small box of this media in one tub and lava rock in another, my bio has kept up incredibly well and I am currently more over crowded than you. I have yet to get an ammonia or nitrate reading and my nitrates stay below 5.0 ppm. I do change quite a bit of water with my flow through system though so of course that helps. I am adding more bakki showers only because I want to increase how much I feed quite a bit.

Is your water prefiltered prior to the sand and gravel filter? Thanks!

The one on the outside pond, yes. The new ones on the inside pond, no. The inside is really just a temp setup for the winter months. Nothing gets in the pond like an outside pond so I'm trying to get away with just the sand/gravel filter and the Bakki shower. So far so good. I flush the sg filter weekly and have not had an issue so far.[/quote]

Thank you rufretic! I'm thinking of a sand and gravel filter to baki styled shower, but don't have a pre filter in place, other than my Savio skimmer with pads.

Just be careful, if your inside filter, is not pre-filtered then you will get solids in it from fish waste which will get it dirtier faster and could cause issues.

Would you agree it's still better to use a sand/gravel filter before the bakki rather than the bakki alone? I feel at least this way I have an easy way to remove the solid waste by flushing the sg filter. I originally setup the bakki on the inside pond to do all the filtration like they originally did in Japan but I could tell I was eventually going to get backed up and the bakki would not be able to keep up. Do you know if they still do that in Japan or have they now realized it's more benificial to prefilter the bakki showers?

The black matala will not catch anything that your blue eco does not. I have the black in another step of my filtration and it is pretty much only good for very large debris like sticks and leaves. It should add some bio though. It will let all fines pass through though.

For my new pond I'd like to go RDF for my mechanical filtration and then as many bakki showers as I can work into my design for the bio. I may add a couple sg filters as well simply because they do an excellent job of polishing the water. I don't know enough about RDFs and how they do for water clarity so of course I still have a lot more research to do but I have not even got approval from the wife for another pond build yet so I don't want to get too far ahead of myself.

About my existing bakki, I did forget to mention I have a pretty fine filter floss pad that I have laid over the first level of the bakki. It does a good job of catching the larger debris for removal but it is WAY too much maintenance to have for a permanent set-up, it pretty much needs to be cleaned multiple times a day to keep up on the bakki that has no prefiltration. I just recently got the second bakki running with the sg prefiltration and so far it is working just as I had hoped, it is keeping the bakki media very clean. The only issue I see is the maintenance that will be needed with the sg once I start feeding heavily. It will probably need to be flushed multiple times a week if I do not add another type of prefiltration before it.

No problem. I'd really like to be able to give back a little and hopefully help at least some new comers to the hobby based on what little experience I have so far. From what I've read, I believe you and I are at about the same level and experience so I'm sure you can agree, we'd be so lost without this site and ones like it. I'm so appreciative of all the great and experienced members that choose to share their knowledge. It is such a great resource and hopefully can help to keep this great hobby growing strong.

For future reference, my name is Lou :D
