West Coast Ikeage
'Ikeage' is the Japanese word used to describe the harvesting of a mud pond full of nishikigoi using a seine net. It is a strenuous, yet rewarding job. It is a common practice for Japanese breeders to accept a fee, the Japanese word for the fee is 'Azukari', and they will keep a customer's nishikigoi for a year at their facilities, until the next fall harvest. The azukari fee includes placing the nishikigoi into their mud ponds during the summer months to grow. Nishikigoi will grow more quickly and develop better frames (bone structure) in mud ponds. When it is time to harvest the nishikigoi in the fall, Japanese breeders often hold events for customers that have purchased koi so that they can see the development of their fish and join in the celebration of another year's growth and beauty.
PSKoi holds an annual event called the West Coast Ikeage. It is a celebration harvest event for customers that have grown their nishikigoi in our mud ponds in the Sacramento, CA area. Customers can see the development that has occurred since they originally bought the fish. We make this a 2 day event in the early fall and when it is possible, we invite customers into the mud ponds to help with the seining of the fish. This is our celebration of the love of nishikigoi and the beauty that captivates all of us.
