Re: Koi Growth - Matsunosuke Style

At this point Mr. Sakai decided that he wanted to keep the Sanke in Isawa for another year in the "rubber" pond. He felt the quality was too high to risk putting it in a mud pond. Here are pics from October 2009 when it was pulled in Isawa. It was around 20".

This year it went to Ojiya and was put in one of Mr. Sakai's larger mud ponds. It was pulled from the first pond in the harvest pictures I showed in our thread. I was not fast enough to get a picture of it being loaded onto the truck at the mud pond but here are a couple of Toshi Sakai putting her into the greenhouse at Yamamatsu.

This Sanke is now about 26" and 4 1/2 years old. Mr. Sakai has asked that it remain in Japan. They are very excited about the quality and potential of this Koi.

Mr. Sakai believes that knowledge, and patience are the two most important attributes a hobbiest needs to keep Koi. The longer a Koi takes to develop the better the quality. It's not the size of the Koi, at Nisai or Tosai that matters, it's the quality and the genetic potential for growth. Koi are a long term project and part of the enjoyment should be the journey.

I did find these pictures of Sanke #1, she spent a summer in one of my mud ponds, being harvested.

On the second Sanke could there be a possibility that if they determine her genetics are so high could they consider to purchase her back to keep her as an Oyagoi, just thinking as a backyard breeder.
At some point common sense must prevail.

They did offer to buy her back and 3 to 4 years ago they actually increased their spawning pairs of Sanke to 7 in order to get another Sanke with this quality. They were able to do that and increase the production levels of high quality Pink Beni Sanke.
