Otsuka is known for unusual varieties but he also has some nice traditional Koi. I saw this Tancho Goshiki and went nuts over the conformation and Tancho spot. The price was good, even for a 65cm Sansai but there are a few little bitty Sumi spots in the Beni of the Tancho.

Today I did something I have not done in a while. I got up early and went to a harvest. Luckily the harvest did not start before Starbucks opened or it would have been a dilemma.

I have been waiting for Hosokai to harvest some of his Nisai ponds and, after badgering him for a couple of days, he said he would do one today. He has been bringing in his bigger fish first. I have been looking for some nice Nisai and was hoping this would yield a few.

I got there at the very early time of 8am and we drove all but 300 feet to a mud pond right behind his greenhouses. If I had know I would have taken a look sooner.

I was really hoping for some Ochiba, Showa and Goshiki. It soon became apparent there wouldn't be any in here.

There are a few Koi I have been eyeing at Hosokai Koi Farm for a couple of weeks. Sometimes when Koi come out of the mud they don't do very well and some of the Koi I was interested in looked terrible.I noticed a couple of them were looking much better so I decided to start pulling some of them. They are all Ochiba, Goshike Shigure (Ochiba Goshiki) or Soragoi.

This first one was by far in the best shape and I am glad I pulled it when I did as the greenhouse was full of dealers going through the Koi.

I had a request for a very nice Ochiba and showed this to that person and they purchased it. It is already sold. I do want to point out how nice the skin is, the scale reticulation and the glow in the Beni.

This is Goshiki Shigure at its best.

The first two are small Nisai, about 12", and the first is an Ochiba where I thought the color may be going away but it is getting stronger. Think of it as fallen leaves that are breaking down. :-J I really like the pattern so I thought I would give it a try. The second one is a Goshiki Shigure with light skin and darker Beni but it does have that glow to it.

These next two are Ochiba and Soragoi. The Ochiba has almost no pattern but the body, scales and color are so nice I could not resist. It could end up a Soragoi or get more color.

Most Ochiba you see have huge patterns on their heads but this one doesn't. To be honest I am not sure if it makes a difference or not but the rest of the Koi works very well.
