Pink or not Pink

Postby PinkRules » February 10th, 2018, 11:04 pm

For people whose last name isn't Sakai, It is tricky to identify pink beni on small tosai. So I decided to make a fool out of myself and picked out some INC tosai from this trip with what look (to me) to be higher probability of being pink.

Could turn out to be 3 strikes.

I cant pick out pink beni unless its super obvious. In these I dont think any are but if i HAD to pick one, my guess would be the first sanke. Again, Im not a pro in picking pink beni. Still learning what to look for. Hopefully, others will join in the convo.

I really don't think any of them are. How will you ever know if you are right or wrong?

I don't think I'll know what pink beni is until I save my pennies and buy one already identified as pink. Of the three prior, I'm not seeing anything in the last two. I chickened out of that INC hunt and went for a tancho (#13) lol.

I didn't select this one because I thought it had pink beni, but I did like the beni. Here is the closest I have to what might be pink(ish), but from Torazo

The reason I said I didn't think any of them are Pink Beni as I went over these with Toshi Sakai after I was asked to do so. He said he didn't know if any of them were but it doesn't look like it at this point. I told him that I thought, from past experience, the ones that turned out "Pink" later were lighter in color at this age. The three that are shown are darker.

Interesting that you mentioned pink beni looks lighter at early stage. I do remember that the small tosai from PSKOI ikeage that turned out to be pink beni all had copper like look. Beni color wasn't the only tell. The skin had to be the translucent type with the look of thick clear coat paint.

Here is a INC tosai pink beni I bought. Obviously, the beni had turned red at this stage. The beni wasn't obviously translucent. Instead, it looked smooth and metalic.

As the fish matured in the next few months, the pink beni became obvious. Unfortunately, beni on this one wasn't stable so it didn't last.

When this lot was first posted, Euryth and I were discussing them and he liked the first one posted, but it was already marked sold. My money was on #86, but I am trying not to overstock until I can evaluate what is growing out under covered. I am curious now that Russ said Pink beni started out lighter.
