Koi Behavior

Postby Cynnikal » June 24th, 2017, 9:13 am

My koi are active and doing well. However, they like to nibble on things such as this one place on the rocks. They are not flashing but they are bound and determined to get whatever is on or under that stone. Once one starts nibbling the others come swimming over thinking they are going to miss something. They will muscle in on each other to try and get a chance at it. I will have to check what is over there. I wonder if it is frog eggs...

I am thinking they may be eating the dried out algae when I do a water change. Now the water level is back up they haven't been nibbling. I will have to see if they do it again next water change.

Ye, my guess is that there is something under the rocks that is enticing them.

Mine do the same thing during water changes .They will stick there heads way out of the water to try and reach algae now exposed to air . The same algae that was underwater and easier to reach a few minutes ago.

One other question. The koi in the picture, "Camo", has taken on silvery sheen as he/she is changing colors. Is this somethinfg normal? Camo isnt flashing or acting funny. I am probably being paranoid. My water is on the soft side and ph is in the 7.6 to 7.8 range. I do a 10 to 25% water change once a week. I have been adding a 1/2 cup of baking soda to my water changes or when we get a lot of rain, which is a lot here lately in Central Georgia. The only parameter i don't know is my water temp bit I am working on it.

Russ, what equipment do you use to monitor water parameters in your tanks and ponds?

There is nothing wrong with the Chagoi. Chagoi and Soragoi are very closely related and sometimes a Chagoi is just an Ochiba, which is Chagoi/Soragoi mix, waiting to bloom.

I actually don't ever monitor my water parameters. I have always relied on visual evidence to tell me that something is up and then I ask Marilyn to check it. She uses an API test kit set up but I am not sure which one. Hopefully she will see this and respond.
