Not for certain. Almost all of these fish, and most that come out of SFF, have very thick leading pec fin rays so its difficult. At the show we did look under the skirt and It looked female to me. I believe Russell saw what I saw. But with young fish; who knows? But I would, and did, bet female. If it grows a penis ill pair it with my kohaku :-BD its a win-win

Well, not the best pictures, but here she is! She is very friendly- likes to eat close to us and totally unafraid of the big girls.

It was a frustrating day near the pond. I found an ulcer on a male and tried to pull him. he rocketed out of the water and left scales on the coping. I re-pulled him to find that the "ulcer" was just a scrape... so now he has two scrapes (still betyter than an ulcer in the fall). While i was out there i pulled the sanke but did not bowl her. I was frustrated. I did take pics. Good news: she is a SHE!, she has world class skin though you cant tell from the photo. She also had explosive growth in the short time ive had her. Great frame and pattern. BAD NEWS: I cant catch a break! She is developing secondary beni. You can see it on her lower gill plate, behind the first beni step, and on the shoulder sumi. What are the odds this reverts? And no, im not feeding color food.... unless nijikawa professional is color food. one sanke loses beni, the other gains it. I have no luck with sanke.

Haven't posted in a while but thought giving updates on these Tosai would be a great idea. I purchased the Kohaku tosai #18, but have had quite the whirlwind of a year so far, so all my koi have experienced very little growth these last few months. I'll give an update on this fish in about a month or so.

Last weekend was the 2017 Atlanta Koi & Goldfish Show and I entered all 8 of the tosai that I purchased from Russ during the Japan trip these SCL tosai were purchased on. While at the show, I noticed one Kohaku tosai that could probably give my little runt some serious competition and was a bit nervous about the results. I took crappy cell phone pics as I usually do at all shows, and went home until the awards banquet that night. When I received the results sheets, I noticed that this Kohaku had just BARELY made it into Size 3, so my Size 2 #18 tosai ended up taking 1st & I was very pleased (all 8 tosai took 1st or 2nd).The owner had two Size 3 Kohaku so I wasn't sure which it was, but both took 1st & 2nd in Size 3. The next day, I was going through the same Japan buying trip thread and noticed a koi that looked EXTREMELY familiar. On my screen was Kohaku tosai #21 and I literally freaked out lol! Apparently, Russell being my best kept secret is a thing of the past :-SS

:-BD It is a girl. Very nice, Inazuma.

All fish in this batch have great skin. For the sanke, the sumi is so deep it is unreal for fish this young.

I wouldn't worry too much about the secondary beni on the underside. It is common for fish with strong beni genes.

Funny story. So both #18 and #21 won 1st at the show?

My #18 did win 1st for Size 2 but I could clearly see how well prepared #21 had been :-T The owner is a judge who had come down to compete, although I forget which club he's from lol.

I'm not 100% sure if #21 took 1st or 2nd because he also had a very nice maruten Kohaku that was Size 3 in the tank as well, though much larger. #21 may have been 12.5" - 13" while the maruten was closer to the 16" cap.

You did well. Can't ask for better results than having eight tosai sweeping #1 and #2.

I was wowed by these SCL tosai. The Atlanta Koi Club show result was a validation of the quality.
