In all honesty, I had never owned a koi of this quality or potential, so I'm as excited to watch them develop as everyone else. I'm praying it's a girl, though for my pond & skill level even a male would be a major step up for me.

I was surprised by the high level of quality of all the fish Russ has available for sale, though. Last year, my relatively inexpensive Kobayashi SU tosai took Best in Size 2. This year, the Omosako SU tosai I purchased took Best in Size 1 & my Hosokai Tancho Showa tosai Best Tancho. This, like the quality of the SCL koi, speaks to the expertise & great customer service we experience having Russ as our dealer.

The vent looked male when I flipped it over. Still a very high quality fish that I expect to grow large judging from the growth rate so far.

That is an absolutely amazing fish! The Beni looks painted on, skin & shiroji glows and the body looks female. That sumi is also spot on - this fish pretty much has everything I wish mine my Sanke had all at once lol. How big is he now, and what's his total growth been so far?

Somewhat related, but I have a gorgeous INC Sanke whose Beni cracked & trapped out on me for no reason I can determine. Is Sable Beni more or less stable than other varieties?

Mine is about 18".

Beni issue has always been one of the most frustrating thing in koi keeping. This season, I have two tosai that turned muji. The fish are otherwise very good quality skin and body wise.

My #18 did win 1st for Size 2 but I could clearly see how well prepared #21 had been :-T The owner is a judge who had come down to compete, although I forget which club he's from lol.

I'm not 100% sure if #21 took 1st or 2nd because he also had a very nice maruten Kohaku that was Size 3 in the tank as well, though much larger. #21 may have been 12.5" - 13" while the maruten was closer to the 16" cap.

Mike Pfeffer, from the Louisville Club, bought #21 from me at the NMZNA show.

Now that I look at the results sheet, I do see M. Pfeffer! The tank it was in was registered under a Troy Head if I recall correctly. That was the judge that I was referring to, and I do believe him saying he brought someone else's fish with him! Really cool to run into spawnmates of your fish though lol :-BD
