Re: Hard & Soft Beni

I don't know if this is how the Japanese would refer to it but all color on a koi, even the skin, has a shelf life. Less desirable specimens lose their Beni and/or Sumi well before a koi has reached maturity. Everything ages and the genetic tendency for them is what we try and figure out when lookin...

Re: Hard & Soft Beni

Not Russ but I don't think that is what he is conveying regarding the Beni. If you look at the first koi, the Beni has depth. What it does not have is each scale indicating what we call Hoshi or Beni development. The first koi has completed its Beni journey. It is all there and monochromatic with no...

Re: Ojiya/Hiroshima/Isawa Bound PSKoi - Spring 2018

Oh boy, I hate to admit it but my gut still guides my purchases. My first impression of a koi solidly colors my decision making. This is usually a lot conformation, quality and skin. I then go back and try and talk myself out of the koi by looking for potential faults. How is the conformation? The B...

:-BD Yes M Me too I’m also very exciting with my first Takigawa kohaku from PS koi There will be a Takigawa in my future but I'm hoping to do that on a trip to Japan. Takigawa-san is a magical breeder to visit and the icing on the cake for me would be to select one there. Don't tell Russ, lol. My i...

When Russ is back and I have more time, I will address this on the other thread you started about Hard Beni. ;-)

Re: Ojiya/Hiroshima/Isawa Bound PSKoi - Spring 2018

The short answer is yes. Russ has been in this business for 19 years. Even when he comes in contact with newer breeders or those he hasn't purchased from before, the breeders he has dealt with will often pave the way and let the newer breeder know of their rapport with him.

Re: Ojiya/Hiroshima/Isawa Bound PSKoi - Spring 2018

I don't think I have ever seen a tail tube on a GinRin Showa tosai like the Kashira. That is awesome. It would be fantastic on any Gosanke tosai but on a GinRin is truly exceptional. :-O I don't believe I've ever heard the term before, but would you mind explaining what 'Kashira' means? Russ can ex...
