We Recommend You Quarantine Your Koi

Recommended Procedure for Quarantine

Place any new Koi in a separate ‘quarantine’ system prior to adding them to your pond for a minimum of 3 weeks using the following procedure:

Make sure that your system is filtered, has good circulation, and can be heated.  Make sure that you have good aeration by use of an air pump and diffusers.

Once fish are added to separate system, gradually warm the pond water at the interval of 1 degree per hour until the temperature reaches 74 degrees F.  After 2 weeks at this temperature any exposure to KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) will show symptoms that include rot on the gills and open sores on the body.

Use salt to .3% to kill any ciliates

Scrape the Koi and view the sample under a microscope to check for external parasites and treat accordingly.

After 2 weeks at 74 degrees F, if any symptoms related to KHV become apparent, we recommend that the Koi, along with any other Koi that came into contact with this Koi, be destroyed, frozen and sent to the University of Georgia  /  http://www.koilab.com  / for diagnostic testing.

At PSKoi, we quarantine all of our new Koi for 3 weeks.  We take 20% of our new shipments from each breeder and heat to 74 degrees F for 2 weeks to check for any symptoms related to KHV.  We also scrape and view the samples under a microscope to check for exterior parasites. Although we have never had fish that have shown symptoms of KHV, we have the equipment and capability to draw blood from Koi, a centrifuge to separate the serum, and the ability to send for a serum test at Koilab.com.

All of our Japanese Koi come from Breeders that have been certified KHV and SVC safe for 2 years.
