for those not in the SF Bay Area:
Koi require a specific type of environment to survive and flourish. It is preferable to have more volume and filtration than the bare minimum, but here are the minimum basic guidelines and requirements for a healthy Koi pond:
Allow for a minimum of 1000 gallons of water (much more is much better)
Avoid predators by keeping straight sides for at least 4 feet
Slope pond bottom and install a bottom drain to improve removal of solid waste and improve circulation
Install jets to improve circulation
Use the appropriate amount of filtration, based on water volume and keeping in mind the amount of Koi you would like to stock - more Koi=more filter (there are many types of mechanical & biological filtration systems) (much more is much better)
Start with an external pre-filter or settling chamber, and include both external mechanical and biological filtration
Include an Ultra Violet Light
Use an external, low energy pump that is appropriate for the water volume and type of filtration used
Use an air pump with diffusers in the pond and filters
